Engineers' Order and General Engineering SocietiesTunisia’s experience in the science education and training of engineers dates back to the 19th century. The first agronomist engineer's college was established in October 1898. However, engineers' education started in other technology fields only after Tunisia's independence in March 1956. In 1969 the Tunis-based National Engineers' School opened. Recent years have seen the creation of more research and engineers' schools accessible to secondary-school graduates on competitive examination. Education was organized in three channels: long, medium and short. This system was reformed during the 1990s after its limitations became apparent during the 1980’s. Under the new system fifteen universities, each accessible via competitive examination, produce approximately one thousand engineers a year who obtain an "Engineer National Diploma". Additionally, higher technicians’ education is provided for by the High Technical Studies institute (ISET). The curricula and the workings of the Engineer National Diploma’s preparatory schools have also made adjustments, in particular to reinforce teaching of economics, languages and communications, as well as to introduce professional periods of probation and make the renewal of modules more frequent. The Ministry of High Education also created the Technological Studies General Board entrusted with supervising university systems for the training of engineers and technicians, and a Technological Studies Renovating Committee to ratify the technology research and education channels leading to the Engineer National Diplomas. |
